The Fine Arts Festival Association of Rockingham County
The Fine Arts Festival Association (FAFA) of Rockingham County is 501(c) 3 non-profit organization incorporated in 1987. Their goal is to promote charitable, educational and creative activities in all areas of the arts. They have been supporting artist and art education in our community for more than sixty years. The Annual Fine Arts Festival held each spring, began in 1945 by the Leaksville-Spray Women’s Club, making it the oldest fine arts show in the state. It was originally held in area churches until it moved to Rockingham Community College in the 1960’s. Last year, there were over 400 entries and 5,000 attendees. In addition, FAFA has a yearly "Emerging Artists Show", highlighting the work of art students in our middle and high schools and an "Arts in Schools" program awarding $200 grants to art teachers across the county for much needed arts supplies. FAFA would like to increase its art education emphasis as well as provide ongoing exhibits with featured artists and musicians. With increased activity and visibility, FAFA is able to further develop its member and sponsorship programs. The City Council Connection The Reidsville City Council understands that investing in the arts is smart economics. Art communities attract tourism and the businesses needed to accommodate them – restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, entertainment venues and other unique shops and cafés. The cultural tourist spends twice the amount of money per day than the general traveler. Supporting the development of an art community makes good sense and encourages continued economic and tourism development. On February 14, 2007, the Reidsville City Council recognized this tremendous asset to our community and has committed resources to its continued growth. With the one year rent free private gift of the renovated gallery space, by the building owners and the city council’s one year commitment for operating expenses, FAFA has, for the very first time in its grand history, a home.
